Making our best bleach better
There are many types of disinfectant on the market but only bleach has the power to kill all known germs – including bacteria, viruses, yeast, mildew and mould. And of all the bleaches out there, Domestos has long been known as the greatest hero of them all, guaranteed to make even the toughest of germs wish they'd never been born. So how could we have made it even better?
Searching for the ideal
For many of you, Domestos was already the ultimate product in hygiene delivery, so we had to persevere to get you to tell us what improvements you would like to see. But the request we heard over and over again was to make the product go on killing germs for longer in the toilet, even after flushing.
Built to last
It requires expert chemistry to develop a new bleach formulation and, after screening many options, our scientists came up with a revolutionary new formulation containing a molecule called CTAC. With CTAC, Domestos 5X coats the toilet bowl, killing germs instantly on contact. It also clings to the toilet bowl flush after flush, so it can keep attacking germs for up to five times longer than any other bleach or toilet cleaner. It does this because CTAC has an opposite charge to the surface of the toilet bowl and so is attracted strongly at a molecular level.
Get real
That might make it sound easy, but in reality our top scientists put Domestos 5X through torture test conditions. From screening millions of samples to ensure 5X delivers the best results and is completely safe to use, to spending the best part of a year and a half testing the product in real toilets – those same scientists also like to take germ samples from loos!
Making the invisible visible
And now we want to show you that Domestos 5X really does do what it says. Because germs are invisible it can be easy to forget they are there, so it's difficult to show 5X's germ-killing capabilities. That's why we developed a test strip* that you can use at home to prove that Dometos 5x is sticking around to kill germs for longer.
